This place has undergone a couple changes in management over the years, and in February 2015 that happened again. The atmosphere is still the same, but the owners switched hands and so did all the staff. The last owners were nice and the food was really good, but now.....it's SO MUCH better!!! Also the menu has expanded a lot , with many new delicious options to choose from. I love the hot and sour soup, and the egg flower soup. Their chicken options are delicious and every dish tastes like they just made it (not pre-prepared or sitting in a warmer). Watch out their Szechuan chicken, it's yummy but the spiciness week creep up on you! I also recommend lunches here, because you get an amazing deal (4 items total, you get to mix and match from the different categories available)! The new owners are also incredibly wonderful. They are so attentive and ask for my feedback on everything and want to make sure I have the best meal possible. They are so helpfu and knowledgeablel that sometimes I will ask them to surprise me with something and give them one or two parameters for what I would like to eat. I come here almost every other week, which is more than any other food place in town.

Recently went back to our standard Chinese restaurant in St. Helens to find new management, and a new chef. Found that the food has gotten *better.* How often can you say that after a big change up? The salt and pepper shrimp is generous, still salty & peppery, and good. This was basically the only thing we would order under the old regime. Hot & sour soup also vastly improved. Overall flavors from one visit and three dishes: very good. We'll keep coming back, trying different things to add to this list. PS...The only thing not improved is the rice, but there's not much that can be done for Chinese style white rice, in my opinion.

Came in to get some take-out and was happy with the short time it took and how good the food was. Will def. be back, especially now that they deliver.

The only quality Chinese place in town. A bit on the pricey side, but well worth it. I'll be sad to see this place close.

If you want a comfortable, quiet place to escape to, Happy Garden is the place to go to. Reasonably priced, fresh food and great service is what you get. My favorite is the Snow Pea Chicken. Their B-bq pork is tender and just good. Both my hubby and I look forward to our visits there. It's like a mini retreat!

So the St. Helens, Warren, Scappoose area has 4 (count them FOUR) Chinese Restaurants. That's a whole lotta Chinese Restaurants in an 8 mile stretch. This place is delightful for several reasons -- the ladies who run the place actually remember your name, and your favorite orders. They ALWAYS remember for instance I don't tolerate Monosodium glutamate and that I like extra crunchy noodles with my sub gum. It's the little stuff like that along with great food that makes coming back so much fun. It's located in a strip mall -- located in an easy access place. So let's talk about the food -- the Mar Far Chicken is a big hit with the locals. I prefer the sub gum chowmein and they make a mean potsticker with the spicest sauce ever! The hot and sour soup is really HOT and SOUR! It's a great place to bring your family -- it's clean, the wait staff's kind, and if you leave hungry it's your fault as the portions are large. The food is not heavy, it's light, nice to look at an flavorful! We go there at least three times a month for a great lunch.

I used to go to Happy Garden once a week with coworkers. We looked forward to big portions, and excellent hot and sour soup. I got take-out the other day, and the portion of Mongolian Beef seemed to be just over half of what it usually is. I was disappointed to say the least.

Fast friendly service. But when the food comes out too quick, quality is sacrificed. Chewy batter on the pre made chicken and wok was too hot, it was more like a crisp candy coating on the chewy inside General Tso chicken. But that's what you get for $7.

New owners! Very pleased with the food and the service! We ordered dinner #3, get a large helping of chow mein and sweet and sour chicken, but only 4 shrimps. (2) #3 subbed one fried shrimp with fried rice and a separate order of sweet and sour chicken with steamed rice. That was enough to feed a family of 5.

Very good food and extremely affordable! Always great portions, food is well flavored and you can taste the freshness. This is the second time I've come here with my fiancée, the first time for dinner, this time for lunch. We both like the General Tso's chicken, pork fried rice and the Mar Far Chicken. -Their crab puffs are tasty, too! :)

By far the best chinese food choice for the area. We enjoy the fresh taste and the nice staff who makes sure our order is just as we like it. Great portions that leave you with enough left overs for lunch the next day! We always get carry out but from what we can see when picking up our food is always clean and bright.

For Chinese food in the Scappoose/St Helens area we always come here. Our favorite on the menu is the Salt and Pepper Shrimp. We had quite a few other dishes and they all are tasty. The only complaint is that any of the menu items marked as spicy aren't all that spicy. If you come for lunch, the plates are huge for the prices around $5-6.

I've been here for lunch twice during the week day. The lunch prices are Cheap and the food is decent. This Chinese restaurant is fairly new, located in a strip mall right along the highway. For $5.50 I got a choice of Egg Flower or Hot and Sour soup and a plate full of Mongolian Beef and rice. This is definitely your typical Americanized Chinese food done well and a bargain for the price! Service is friendly and the food comes out fast.

very, very, basic american-chinese fare. i had to ask for chopsticks. i liked the hot and sour soup better than the pork egg foo yung. staff is friendly and the restaurant is clean, neat, tidy and brightly lit by the front windows.

Happy Garden has delicious and very fresh food. We have been here at least a dozen times. Everything we have tried we have enjoyed. The staff is VERY sweet! They will remember you and appreciate you choosing them for dinner. My favorite is the Chicken and Vegetables.

BEST Chinese is 50 miles! Small space, like a mall store (which it is) offers a bright, cheery atmosphere. Always clean, great food and they will customize dishes to diabetics even! We love it and eat often for lunch and with clients plus dinners! Owners are very caring about customers and friendly. We've been eating here since they opened and have not had a bad experience yet! Hours are a little funky on weekends, but it is family run and they have to have a life too!

Hey! It says "Gourmet" on the big marquees outside the place! I want to see that reflected here on Yelp as well...! You might think St. Helen's is far too small and provincial a burgh to sustain three Chinese-American fine-dining choices, but thank the Lord for Capitalism, and pass some more of that sinus-clearing hot mustard, please! Of the three, the best in consideration of "the food, only" would be Happy Garden. They are the only ones, after all, to offer the glorious and under-rated Salt/Pepper Shrimp! Their S/P chicken is also so tender and delicious. All them sauteed white onions and scallions have a boy like me hollering the praises! Sadly, they curiously omitted the grand prize of American Chinese, Salt/Pepper squid. So they are dinged for that, and also for closing so early (9pm, really? Even though you're right next to Walmart's which is open 24/7? It's not like there wouldn't be business coming in, if you kept it open a few hours later...). Their carry out box for shrimp fried rice was huge, maybe twice the size of the typical "large" Chinese carry out box, but there were very, VERY few shrimp--- probably 6 or less non-jumbo, for the entire box! I don't know if this is a sister store to the restaurant of the same name in SE Portland (122nd, I believe). But I think they are; the folks in St. Helen's told me they commute all the way back/forth from Portland. Seems odd that they'd prefer to spend so much valuable time just gettin' there and gettin' back, especially considering how cheap Real Estate is out in Columbia County, but whatever. Happy Garden, we are so glad you have come to root out St. Helen's way, and here's a fervent wish for luck, and that your blossoms may ripen and bloom and prosper you for years to come! Shay shay!

I love this place. What I find that sets them apart is you can taste the freshness of their meals. They allow me to make substitutions at a price however, I get my meal my way. I hate cabbage. My favorite has got to be the Shrimp Lo Mein no cabbage add snow peas. The veggies still have a slight crisp to them, the shrimp is done just right-not over done and rubbery. Another favorite is the Kung Pow chicken. They use white meat chicken in this dish and lots of veggies. Tons of peanuts on top. The service has always been great. They even get to know you and will anticipate my order, or ask how my mom is or where my daughter is tonight. They only saw us together once.

Ever since I went here, I've been dreaming of mar far chicken. The food tastes so fresh and unique. This is certainly "gourmet" Chinese food. Very friendly staff and clean interior. Only one free refill if you dine in. Cheap lunch specials that come with soup. I will be going back ASAP.

I ate dinner at "Happy Garden Chinese Restaurant" in St. Helen's, OR on 8/17/2012. It was my first time there. My friend Russ had their #3 combo for $8.95 while I had the sesame beef for $12.95. Both were good. We had good service as well.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
